A 36-year-old director of a Miri-based company has been swindled out of RM1.3 million after responding to what she believed was a genuine cake-seller’s advertisement on social media. According to the Miri police, the victim received a WhatsApp link inviting her to browse and order personalised cakes. Convinced it originated from a reputable bakery, she followed the link and was prompted to enter her mobile number and a one-time password (OTP).

Unbeknownst to her, the fraudsters then used those details to carry out online transfers from her company’s bank account. By the time she realised that significant sums had vanished, RM1.3 million had already been siphoned off through a series of transactions.

The victim promptly lodged a report at the Miri district police headquarters. Authorities have launched an investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code (cheating) and Section 4(1) of the Computer Crimes Act. Detectives are tracing the culprits’ digital trail and coordinating with banking partners in an effort to recover the lost funds.

Police are warning business owners and the general public to exercise vigilance before clicking on unknown links. They advise:
• Confirm the sender’s identity by phoning an official number you already have, instead of replying directly to the message.
• Refrain from sharing OTPs or any banking credentials, even if the requester claims to be from your bank or a familiar service provider.
• Activate robust security features such as two-factor authentication and transaction alerts on your bank accounts.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Miri Commercial Crime Investigation Department at 085-425111 (ext. 160) or submit tips through the MyCCID Telelink app.
