Sarawak’s deputy tourism and culture minister has appealed to Malaysia Airlines to reinstate and broaden its Kuala Lumpur–Miri service, warning that the limited flight schedule is hampering travel and commercial links between the state and the capital.
On a visit to Miri last week, Datuk Sebastian Ting urged the carrier to bring back daily round trips and, if feasible, introduce additional legs to accommodate growing demand. He pointed out that following pandemic-related route cuts and ongoing aircraft and crew shortages, both visitors and residents are finding it hard to secure seats. He added that high load factors are driving fares up and forcing travellers to alter their plans at the last moment.
Ting proposed that Malaysia Airlines explore incentives—like reduced airport fees or promotional backing from the Sarawak government—to make extra flights economically sustainable. He also argued that a denser schedule would support the state’s efforts to develop leisure and business tourism and strengthen trade connections.
To date, Malaysia Airlines has not announced specific new flight times but told Malay Mail it is “actively reviewing” capacity on the KL–Miri sector. The airline acknowledged Miri as one of its top domestic destinations and said it is working “within the constraints of aircraft availability and crew rostering” to add more slots where possible.
Local travel agencies and frequent fliers have applauded the request, noting that Miri’s swift economic expansion and its role as an access point to nearby national parks justify daily—and ideally twice-daily—services to Kuala Lumpur. Although AirAsia and Firefly also serve the route, their timetables still leave gaps, especially during peak holiday seasons.
While discussions progress, the Sarawak government has signalled it will closely track passenger volumes and is prepared to negotiate commercially viable support arrangements with Malaysia Airlines to secure a more dependable air link for the state.
