Sarawak is set to host nearly 100 emerging junior golfers from ten nations at the Sarawak Premier Cup opening in Miri later this month. The Sarawak Golf Association, backed by the state’s Sports Ministry, will stage the tournament from July 27 to 30 at the Miri Golf Club.
All competitors are under 18 and will join Malaysia’s representatives, including players from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, China, Japan, South Korea and Australia. They will battle in various age brackets, with both boys and girls contesting trophies in scratch and handicap categories.
Datuk Hii King Chiong, president of the Sarawak Golf Association, explained that the competition is designed to sharpen local talent by pitting them against tougher opposition, while also promoting Miri as a hub for sports tourism. “We’re delighted to welcome so many talented juniors,” he said, adding that cultural and hospitality-focused activities have been planned as part of the event.
Among the home team’s contenders are last year’s girls’ 15–18 champion, who aims to retain her title, along with several top-ranked under-14 boys from East Malaysia. Coaches and officials believe the tournament will raise golf standards in the region and help young Sarawakians transition to international play.
Admission is free for spectators, and on July 30 the closing ceremony will include award presentations, cultural showcases and a junior-skills demonstration. Organisers are optimistic the four-day event will become a fixture on Asia’s junior-golf circuit.
