By assuming control of these 79 federally supported projects, Abang Johari said Sarawak will secure a more seamless transfer of assets and better synchronization with its existing pipe network and reservoirs.
Upon approval of the takeover, Sarawak’s Public Works Department and Rural Water Supply Department will manage construction and maintenance. The state is targeting universal water coverage—both urban and rural—within the next few years, in line with a cornerstone of its own development blueprint.
Abang Johari recognized the federal government’s important role in funding critical services but emphasized that local oversight will bring faster benefits to Sarawakians, especially those in remote areas. The handover process is set to commence in the coming months, pending final sign-off from Kuala Lumpur.
