MIRI (Jan 18): Officers in Miri have busted an illicit diesel‐storage operation, confiscating over 15,000 litres of fuel from a three-storey bungalow on Jalan Pujut Tanjung. Four men, aged between 23 and 45, were detained during the late-afternoon raid.

The Miri district criminal investigation division executed a search warrant after receiving a tip‐off about unusual tanker movements nearby. Inside the bungalow compound, detectives discovered dozens of 200-litre drums, large-capacity storage tanks and hoses connecting an on-site pump to a waiting lorry. All the equipment and fuel were seized.

Asst. Supt. Roslan Deraman, who led the raid, explained that suspects are believed to have procured subsidised fuel from licensed petrol stations before diverting it for sale at inflated prices. “This syndicate was operating under the guise of a private residence and had evaded detection for some time,” he said. “Their activities not only defraud government coffers and legitimate firms, but also pose major environmental and fire hazards.”

The four men have been remanded for further questioning under Section 41(2) of the Police Act 1967. Authorities are pursuing charges under the Petroleum (Safety Measures) Act 1984 and related regulations. Investigators are also tracing the upstream supply chain to identify additional accomplices and determine how long the illegal scheme had been in operation.

Miri district police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah warned that anyone caught knowingly buying or storing fuel without a valid licence risks severe penalties, including hefty fines and imprisonment. He urged residents to report any suspicious fuel-delivery activities to their nearest police station or to the Energy Commission’s hotline.
