A German tourist has died after losing consciousness while snorkelling off a Sabah island. Sabah Parks officials report the 50-year-old was on a snorkelling excursion at about 10 am on Monday when she suddenly went unresponsive in the waters near Sapi Island, part of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park off Kota Kinabalu.
Park lifeguards promptly pulled her ashore and began first-aid procedures, including CPR, until paramedics arrived. Sabah Fire and Rescue Department teams reached the scene shortly after and carried on resuscitation efforts before rushing her by road ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Despite these attempts, she was declared dead on arrival.
Marine Park authorities confirm there were no indications of foul play. Her body was sent to the hospital’s forensic unit for a post-mortem to pinpoint the exact cause of death. Park director Nor Ezzatie Mohd Radzi reminded visitors to follow safety protocols—wearing life vests, staying within marked snorkelling areas and never venturing out alone—especially in open waters where sudden medical issues can be fatal.
