KUCHING, Sept 28 — The state representative for Kota Sentosa today accused the DAP of wrongly targeting the Sarawak government over enforcement issues in the Free School Bus Programme. He said all regulatory and safety enforcement responsibilities rest with federal agencies, not the state.
According to the GPS lawmaker, Sarawak’s role has been to provide funding, oversee vehicle procurement and support operators selected through open tender. Once buses are delivered, however, licensing, route approvals, vehicle inspections and driver safety training fall under the jurisdiction of the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), as well as the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
“Any failure to enforce safety standards or penalise errant operators is entirely a matter for federal bodies,” he said. “If the DAP believes buses are operating without proper licences or that drivers lack necessary training, they should lodge their complaints with APAD or JPJ — not level accusations at the state.”
He noted that, since its launch, the Free School Bus Programme has helped more than 30,000 rural and urban students travel safely to and from school without charge. “We remain committed to providing safe, reliable transport for all students in Sarawak,” he added. “State funding and oversight have ensured the smooth delivery of vehicles and route infrastructure. Enforcement is simply beyond our remit.”
The Kota Sentosa rep also urged the federal opposition to work constructively with national agencies to resolve any operational shortcomings, rather than politicise an initiative that benefits families across the state. “We welcome constructive feedback,” he said, “but it must be directed to the proper authorities empowered to act.”
