Yesterday afternoon, a 13-year-old boy lost his life by drowning while swimming in a pond on the outskirts of Miri city. Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) officials stated that the boy and several friends had been cooling off at the popular youth spot when he slipped below the surface. His friends raised the alarm after he failed to reappear, prompting an immediate search.

Firefighters arrived at around 3 pm, supported by divers from the Bomba’s water rescue team. About 20 minutes later, they recovered the boy’s body roughly five metres from shore at a depth of two metres. Paramedics pronounced him dead shortly after he was brought ashore.

Authorities found no indication of foul play and have classified the incident as a sudden death. The family has been notified, and the boy’s remains were transferred to Miri Hospital for a post-mortem. Investigators are urging parents and guardians to supervise children closely around natural water bodies and to follow all safety warnings.

State Bomba director Wan Nazmi Wan Ahmad noted that many such tragedies can be averted if swimmers—especially younger ones—adhere to basic precautions like wearing life jackets, staying within marked swimming zones, and avoiding dives into unknown waters. He encouraged the public to treat ponds and rivers with the same respect they would a monitored pool.
