The Premier of Sarawak has announced intentions to transform Miri into a regional centre for oil-and-gas support services, seeking to reinforce the state’s standing in the upstream energy industry and drive further economic expansion.
During a recent press conference, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg outlined that the facility would focus on maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC), as well as logistics and fabrication services customised for exploration and production operators.
“Our objective is to establish a one-stop centre that brings together specialised contractors, skilled professionals and ancillary suppliers close to offshore fields,” he said. “By leveraging Miri’s existing infrastructure—its airport, seaport and industrial estates—we can shorten lead times, reduce expenses and attract new investment.”
To bring this plan to life, the Sarawak government will collaborate with PETRONAS Carigali and other major industry players on workforce development initiatives, technology transfer schemes and joint research projects. A purpose-built training academy is also slated to open, offering courses in advanced welding, nondestructive testing, subsea operations and digital oilfield solutions.
Abang Johari stressed that the hub aligns with the state’s 12th Malaysia Plan commitments and wider sustainability targets. “We are exploring green solutions—such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage, along with hydrogen production—to ensure long-term resilience and a lower carbon footprint,” he added.
Developers have been invited to participate in forthcoming tender exercises for land parcels within the Miri O&G Support Services Cluster. The Premier expressed confidence that, once fully operational, the centre will create thousands of skilled positions, deepen the local supply network and cement Sarawak’s role as a leading energy services hub in Southeast Asia.
