The Honourable Chief Justice Tan Sri Dato’ Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh concluded his two-day evaluation tour across Sarawak yesterday, culminating in an official visit to the Miri Courts Complex.

Touching down late Monday morning, the Chief Justice was welcomed at the main entrance by Judicial Commissioner Datuk Mohd Radzuan Rahman and a delegation of senior court officials. After a brief reception, he was guided through an inspection of the various courtrooms, registry offices and mediation chambers.

In remarks to the staff, Wan Ahmad Farid lauded the Miri Courts’ dedication to efficiency and transparency, highlighting recent enhancements in case management and the rollout of e-filing systems. “The administration of justice must evolve not only with the law but also with the expectations of today’s society,” he said. He urged judges and court personnel to pursue further digital innovations, particularly in streamlining civil and criminal procedures.

During his visit, the Chief Justice observed a live small-claims hearing and spoke briefly with the parties involved. He also attended a session of the Court of Appeal, commending its members for upholding high standards in judgment writing despite a heavy caseload.

Earlier in his itinerary, Wan Ahmad Farid toured Kuching and Sibu, inspecting High Court registries, family and juvenile divisions, and district magistrates’ courts. He met with the Sarawak Bar Association, discussed the challenges facing rural courts, and reviewed facilities earmarked for upgrades under the judiciary’s infrastructure plan.

To close his programme in Miri, the Chief Justice addressed local lawyers and court staff at a luncheon, expressing appreciation for their “dedication, resilience and warm hospitality” and encouraging all judicial members to collaborate closely in upholding the rule of law.

This Sarawak tour is part of the Federal Court’s outreach initiative, designed to ensure consistent standards throughout Malaysia’s legal system and to gather on-the-ground feedback from less urbanised areas. With the Miri visit complete, Wan Ahmad Farid will return to Kuala Lumpur today to preside over several forthcoming full-court sessions.
