Gerawat Nanang anak Nyipa has directed the Miri Resident’s Office and JKR Miri to swiftly seek an emergency fund release from the State Treasury to repair and upgrade the road into Long Lellang. This move follows a series of heavy rains and landslides that have severely compromised large sections of the sole overland access to this Baram settlement.

Gerawat noted that Long Lellang’s remote location, home to over 700 residents primarily of Kenyah and Punan descent, depends on reliable road links for medical evacuations, deliveries of food and construction supplies, and student transport to and from Miri. “Delays in fixing this route directly endanger our community’s safety and well-being,” he stated.

JKR Miri has completed initial surveys, flagging multiple points where soil erosion has damaged the pavement, blocked or destroyed culverts, and washed away extensive gravel surfacing. Detailed cost estimates are being prepared, with the department projecting at least RM3 million will be required to clear debris, stabilize shoulders, replace damaged culverts, and re-gravel approximately 20 kilometers of roadway.

Local residents, who typically use small four-wheel-drive vehicles, have raised concerns about longer travel times and frequent breakdowns. Teachers at Long Lellang’s primary and secondary schools report that classes are often disrupted when vehicles fail or when the road is impassable.

Gerawat urged both the Resident’s Office and JKR to expedite their proposals to the State Works Committee, warning that any hold-up in funding will prolong difficulties for these isolated communities. “We cannot wait any longer,” he insisted. “Every day of delay puts lives and livelihoods at risk.”
