Sarawak Immigration Intensifies Crackdown on Migrant Smuggling in Lundu

Sarawak immigration officials have intensified their crackdown on human smuggling after a recent raid in Lundu uncovered what authorities suspect to be a migrant trafficking ring.

On May 6, acting on intelligence from “Ops Benteng” – the nationwide border-security campaign – officers from the Sarawak Immigration Department stormed a residence in Kampung Sematan, Lundu. Inside, they found 14 Indonesian nationals aged 17 to 40, all without valid entry documents. Two Malaysian men, believed to be orchestrating the smuggling scheme, were also arrested.

Confiscated during the operation were:
• A speedboat engine and two outboard motors
• A jet-ski engine
• Roughly 20 lifejackets and various marine supplies

Division Controller Hercules Bungajan told reporters that the Indonesians and their two local “handlers” are detained under the Immigration Act 1959/63. Investigations continue, with further charges under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM) possible.

Bungajan added that Ops Benteng has been stepped up across Sarawak’s coastal and riverine zones. Patrols now employ drones and night-vision cameras and coordinate with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Malaysia Customs, and the Royal Malaysian Police.

He urged border-area residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious movements to the nearest Immigration office or via the hotline at 03-8880 5800.
