The federal government has approved RM150 million to kickstart urgent refurbishment of the Sungai Sarawak Barrage. The funding follows a formal plea from Sarawak state officials stressing the need to reinforce the 28-year-old facility.

Constructed in 1995 at about RM750 million, the barrage is crucial for safeguarding Kuching and Samarahan against tidal influxes and for ensuring raw-water supply to households and industries. Over time, its gates, hydraulic assemblies, and control systems have shown signs of wear, raising safety and functionality issues.

Under the sanctioned budget, appointed contractors will perform comprehensive repairs—including overhauling the distributary and sector gates, swapping out degraded hydraulic rams and actuators, strengthening concrete piers, and modernising the barrage’s electronic monitoring and control infrastructures. Dredging to clear built-up silt and debris around the barrage toe is also included.

Sarawak’s Chief Minister applauded Putrajaya’s go-ahead, predicting that the restoration will add at least 15 years to the barrage’s operational life. Preliminary site surveys and detailed engineering designs are slated to start in Q2 2024, with on-site work expected to last about a year.
