Public Works and Utilities Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi today revealed that the Sarawak state government is set to formally assume control of its new Aerodrome Operations Complex (AOC) in February. The RM93 million facility has entered its concluding phases of testing and commissioning, with the transfer of ownership anticipated within the coming weeks.
Erected from mid-2019, the three-storey complex encountered delays due to pandemic-related supply chain disruptions and labour restrictions. Nonetheless, the structural framework was finalised in November 2023, and interior installations, system integrations, and safety verifications are now complete.
Upon handover, the Sarawak Department of Airports will relocate its administrative staff into the new premises and initiate orientation and training programmes. The facility includes a consolidated control tower, operations and coordination suites, a weather observation station, briefing rooms for pilots, and an on-site incident response centre. Its sophisticated flight-data processing platform and high-definition communications infrastructure are built to enhance real-time supervision of aircraft traffic and apron operations.
Datuk Julaihi commented that the AOC will optimise aerodrome administration, boost emergency coordination, and accommodate rising passenger and freight volumes. He also noted that the roll out of new runway navigation systems and apron illumination enhancements—scheduled to finish later this year—will further supplement the complex, ensuring a safer and more efficient airport to meet Sarawak’s expanding aviation demands.
