Early exposure to the English language and strong multilingual foundations are crucial in preparing Sarawakian children for future academic success.

Kota Sentosa state assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, emphasized that early childhood education plays a vital role not only in developing basic literacy skills but also in shaping children’s confidence, discipline, and values.

Importance of English in Education

English is the language of knowledge and international communication,” he stated. “When children are exposed at a young age, they become more confident and courageous when entering the school system,” he mentioned during the Tabika KEMAS Appreciation Ceremony for Parliament P196 Stampin.

He highlighted that in Sarawak, English serves as the medium of instruction for science and mathematics at the primary school level, making early mastery an added advantage for pupils.

Strengthening Multilingualism

At the same time, he stressed that Bahasa Melayu must continue to be strengthened alongside English to nurture a multilingual generation, which he described as a significant strength of Sarawak’s diverse society.

“This bilingual or multilingual ability is a great asset for our children as anak Sarawak,” he asserted.

Putting these aspirations into action, the ceremony celebrated the achievements of 337 six-year-olds, who received their Early Childhood Education Completion Certificates for the 2024-2025 academic session.

Children who excelled academically, actively participated in Tabika KEMAS activities, or took part in talent development programmes organized by KEMAS were also recognized.

Acknowledging Excellence

Among the awards presented were the Hufaz Cilik (five-year-old category) from Tabika KEMAS Kem Semenggo, Digital Hero (girls category) from Tabika KEMAS Kem Penrissen, Digital Hero (boys category) from Tabika KEMAS TUDM Batu 10, and Pantomime from Tabika KEMAS Rantau Panjang.

The program also featured performances showcasing children’s talents, nurtured through the guidance and dedication of KEMAS community educators.

Yap congratulated all graduates, urging them to continue learning diligently, heed their teachers’ and parents’ advice, and aim high in their future endeavors. He also announced an allocation of RM5,000 to support the appreciation program.
