Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (Cahya Mata) has initiated the groundbreaking of its RM673 million Clinker Line 2 project at Mambong. This significant expansion aims to double the group’s clinker production capacity and enhance Sarawak’s cement supply resilience.

The event was officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who praised Cahya Mata for its commitment to innovative and sustainable production methods. He noted that the Clinker Line 2 project is aligned with Sarawak’s long-term sustainable development agenda under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

Innovative Steps Towards Sustainability

“I must congratulate Cahya Mata for your bold step in using recovered waste as part of your energy, and also in producing eco-cement, which is the material we need now to balance the effects of carbon emissions and to move towards a net-zero carbon emissions goal,” he stated.

“That means you are able to balance and equalise carbon emissions with the use of renewable or sustainable materials in the production process, and for that, I must commend Cahya Mata for your innovative process,” he added during the groundbreaking ceremony.

Advancements in Technology

Cahya Mata Group Managing Director Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Abdul Taib, in his earlier speech, outlined that the project will integrate cutting-edge technology to minimize carbon dioxide emissions. This will include the use of alternative raw materials and fuels sourced locally.

“Our factory will be equipped with waste heat recovery system technology, capable of producing approximately six megawatts (MW) of clean energy. Along with that, a more advanced dust filtration system will be utilized to ensure that dust emissions remain well below the regulatory limits set by the relevant authorities,” he explained.

The Clinker Line 2 project, managed through its wholly-owned subsidiary Cahya Mata Cement Sdn Bhd, is set to achieve a production capacity of up to 6,000 metric tonnes per day. This will increase the group’s annual clinker output from 900,000 metric tonnes to 1.9 million metric tonnes upon completion.

Construction is projected to take two years, with commissioning targeted for the second quarter of 2027. Once operational, the facility will provide clinker to Cahya Mata Cement’s grinding plants across Sarawak, further strengthening its integrated production system.

The construction works are being executed by Sinoma Industry Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of China’s Tianjin Cement Industry Design & Research Institute, which has been appointed as the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) contractor.

Notable attendees at the event included Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Deputy Minister of Transport (Aviation and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, and others.
