A total of 80 Form Three and Form Four students participated in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) NextGen Camp Programme at SMK Lubok Antu from December 16 to 17.
Themed ‘Crafting the Experience, One Skill at a Time,’ this two-day programme served as a strategic platform aimed at introducing secondary school students to industry-relevant skills and practical competencies aligned with current and future workforce demands.
Hands-on Learning Experience
Through interactive modules, students engaged with essential elements of technical proficiency, problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, and adaptability.
They gained hands-on experience in various courses, including NFT hydroponic systems, basic electrical installation, basic air-conditioning installation, and making buns and cookies. This exposure allowed students to explore a range of technical and vocational fields.
Importance of TVET
During the closing ceremony, the chief strategy officer of Sarawak Skills, Mohamad Isham Fauzi, emphasized the crucial role of TVET in human capital development and economic sustainability.
“TVET plays a pivotal role in preparing a skilled, competent, and resilient workforce,” he stated. He remarked that programmes like the TVET NextGen Camp are vital in fostering early interest among students, helping them to appreciate the value of hands-on skills, industry exposure, and continuous learning in shaping successful career pathways.
He further noted that such early engagement is essential for bridging the gap between education and industry, empowering students to make informed decisions about their future.
Support from Educators
School administrators and educators at SMK Lubok Antu strongly endorsed the programme, highlighting its positive impact on student engagement, confidence, and career awareness.
They recognized that the initiative complements efforts to enhance the TVET ecosystem and promote skills-based education as a credible and attractive pathway for youth in Sarawak.
The camp’s success reflects the ongoing commitment of stakeholders to invest in talent development, foster industry-ready competencies, and support state and national goals for a highly skilled workforce.
