A recent Community Walkabout and Dialogue in Sekama highlighted a significant collaborative effort aimed at enhancing community safety. This initiative involved the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Sarawak Chapter, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and the JKKK Sekama, all working together through direct engagement and dialogue.
The event commenced with a dialogue session that allowed residents to express their concerns and provide feedback directly to law enforcement and community leaders, fostering an environment of open communication.
Community Walkabout Details
Following the dialogue, participants engaged in a community walkabout, which took place from 10:10 AM to noon. This activity enabled attendees to observe local conditions and gain a deeper understanding of the issues discussed earlier.
Residents raised several critical concerns, including the need for increased police patrol visibility, issues related to homelessness, entertainment venues operating beyond permitted hours, and drug-related activities.
Proposed Initiatives for Improvement
To enhance communication, participants suggested creating a WhatsApp group led by Sekama Police Station, with assistance from MCPF Sarawak and JKKK Sekama. This group would facilitate real-time information sharing and coordination among stakeholders.
In response to community feedback, PDRM shared details about ongoing and future crime prevention initiatives, such as the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP), the formation of neighborhood watch groups, and anti-crime awareness talks aimed at promoting preventive behaviors within the community.
The event concluded positively, emphasizing that effective crime prevention relies on trust, communication, and shared responsibility among all community members.
This initiative has further solidified cooperation between law enforcement, local authorities, community leaders, and residents, underscoring Sekama’s commitment to fostering a safer and more resilient community.
Key participants included ASP Simon Renang, head of Sekama Police Station; DSP Jo Hang, head of the Crime Prevention & Community Safety Division; MCPF representatives Tang Siang Luang and David Law; JKKK Sekama representatives Penghulu Tommy Thian and Kapitan Kho Phek Choo; and Kuching City South Council (MBKS) councillors Nicholas Wung and Joanne Jong Jia Chee.
