Tan Lek Jin highlights the longstanding delay in recognizing the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), despite its stable operation over several decades.

The publicity secretary of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Piasau Branch and Miri City councillor, Tan Lek Jin, has called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to put an end to the politicization of issues related to race and education. He urges the Prime Minister to provide a clear policy direction regarding the recognition of the UEC.

In his statement, Tan expressed concern that the repeated attempts by some political figures in Peninsular Malaysia to incite racial tensions have been detrimental to national unity and social stability. He characterized such actions as irresponsible and at odds with the principles of inclusive governance.

Call for Immediate Action

Tan firmly stated, “The deliberate manipulation of sensitive racial issues must end immediately.”

He pointed out that despite the UEC system operating effectively for many years, its recognition has been postponed without justification.

Furthermore, Tan noted that the curriculum and examination standards of the UEC are widely recognized by higher education institutions globally. He warned that any attempt to distract from the core issue by inciting racial sentiments is irresponsible and could jeopardize students’ futures while undermining public trust.

Emphasizing the Importance of UEC Recognition

Addressing Prime Minister Anwar directly, Tan urged him to take decisive action regarding the long-overdue recognition of the UEC, ensuring that it is not subject to political maneuvering.

He stressed that officially recognizing the UEC would not threaten the national education system or infringe on the rights of any community. Instead, it would assist in retaining talent, enhancing Malaysia’s competitiveness, and showcasing the country’s diversity and inclusiveness.

“If the Madani government wishes to earn the trust of the people, it must convert its pledges into tangible actions rather than empty rhetoric,” Tan added.

Support for Chinese Education

Tan also commended Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his unwavering support of Chinese education and independent secondary schools through consistent funding.

He described Abang Johari’s pragmatic approach as a model for coexistence within a diverse educational framework.

Tan concluded by asserting that the future of the nation should not be held captive by racial politics. He called on all political leaders to engage in rational discourse, prioritize long-term national interests, cease exploiting racial issues, and promptly recognize the UEC to ensure a fairer educational future for the upcoming generation.
