MIRI, May 8 (DayakDaily) – DayakDaily reports that Miri has become the first city in Malaysia to implement traffic-signal priority for public buses, a strategy aimed at reducing intersection wait times and boosting overall reliability. Now in a pilot phase, the system uses onboard transponders and roadside detectors to communicate with traffic lights ahead of approaching buses. If a bus is behind schedule or encounters a red light, the system can extend the green phase or shorten the opposing signal, allowing the bus to proceed with minimal delay.
According to Miri City Council mayor Adam Yii, early findings are positive. “On our trial corridor, we’ve seen intersection delays drop by around 20% and overall journey times decrease by nearly 10%. Passengers experience better punctuality, and our buses spend less time idling at signals,” he said.
Rapid Bhd, which runs Miri’s public bus network, fitted ten buses and six major signalised junctions along the Permyjaya–Lutong route with the required equipment. Data from the system feeds into the city’s existing SCATS traffic management platform, enabling real-time monitoring and fine-tuning of signal-priority settings.
Riders report shorter commutes and fewer missed connections. One regular commuter, Ahmad Faisal, said, “I used to build in extra time to avoid missing my transfer, but now buses arrive more predictably. It makes a big difference, especially during peak hours.”
Given the pilot’s success, the city council and Rapid Bhd plan to extend the signal-priority scheme to additional routes later this year. They are also exploring integration with a new mobile app that will offer live arrival times based on current traffic conditions.
“This is just the beginning,” Mayor Yii added. “We hope Miri’s implementation will serve as a model for other Malaysian cities seeking faster, more reliable bus service and encouraging more people to leave their cars at home.”
