Kuching North Datuk Bandar Dato Hilmy Othman has announced that proposals aimed at enhancing the drainage system in crucial areas have been submitted. The implementation of these proposals will take place once the allocations under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) receive approval.

He emphasized, “These measures are part of a long-term strategy designed to fortify the city’s drainage system and mitigate flood risks, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of residents.” This statement was made after a site inspection of a flood-prone area near the Waterfront Esplanade.

Commitment to Improvement

Dato Hilmy stated that the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) is dedicated to collaborating with relevant agencies to ensure that flood mitigation strategies are implemented effectively and progressively.

He further mentioned that the drainage system in several parts of the city is reportedly under control, thanks to ongoing maintenance efforts conducted by DBKU.

“Inspections and site visits have revealed that the existing drainage systems are functioning adequately, effectively linking surrounding areas within the city,” he added.

Regular Maintenance and Monitoring

According to Dato Hilmy, these drainage channels are routinely maintained—typically once every three months. The assessments focus on the capacity and efficiency of the drainage system in handling excess water flow, as well as identifying any technical limitations that could lead to flooding.

He clarified that the inspection is part of DBKU’s proactive measures to tackle flood risks, particularly during the heavy rainfall season at the end of the year.

As of now, the main drainage channels are reported to be free from rubbish and debris, enabling smooth water flow during heavy rain. However, DBKU remains vigilant and will continue enhancing monitoring and maintenance efforts at critical locations.

Focus on High-Risk Areas

“These initiatives include regular cleaning, assessments of drainage capacity, and active participation from DBKU’s technical officers to ensure that the drainage infrastructure remains optimal,” he explained.

Dato Hilmy also noted that DBKU has identified several high-risk areas that need continuous attention, such as low-lying regions and locations recognized as flood hotspots.
