MIRI: Last week, Miri’s own Mandy Ngieng, an emerging referee, made state sporting history as the first—and to date sole—female official from Sarawak appointed for this year’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games football tournament.
Ngieng, who embarked on her officiating journey in 2016 after completing a certificate course with the Football Association of Malaysia, was chosen by the SEA Games Organising Committee to join the match officials panel in Phnom Penh. Her selection marks the first time a Sarawakian woman has taken charge in the centre at a major regional football event.
“I am proud to represent Sarawak on such a grand stage,” Mandy said after overseeing her debut match, a 2-1 win for Vietnam over Laos. “I hope my example shows other women that dedication and continuous learning can open doors to opportunities.”
Richard Ling, president of the Sarawak Football Association, lauded Ngieng’s success as “a milestone for women referees in our state.” He noted that her assured handling of a high-pressure late penalty call highlighted the quality of officials Sarawak can develop.
Ngieng will next focus on the Malaysia Premier League, officiating local fixtures while working toward the advanced fitness tests and rules assessments required for her ultimate goal—earning a spot on FIFA’s international list. “This is only the start,” she remarked. “My aim is to inspire more young women from Sarawak to see that they too can referee at the highest levels of the game.”
