KUCHING: In the face of technological revolution and the economic changes following COVID-19, Sarawak emphasizes Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a primary platform for producing a highly skilled and technology-savvy local workforce.

The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, stated that TVET serves as the main engine in preparing the state’s workforce to tackle global economic challenges and advancements in sophisticated technology.

Economic Transformation and Workforce Development

“Sarawak is currently on the brink of economic transformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI), modern technology, and the demands for global sustainability,” he remarked.

He added, “This structural economic transformation increases the demand for local labor that is not only skilled in technical aspects but also knowledgeable about new technologies and capable of adapting to the needs of future industries.”

He made these remarks through a speech read by the Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, during the Premier Sarawak Golden Hand Award Ceremony 2025 held here today.

Investing in Human Capital

According to him, Sarawak’s ability to develop high-quality human capital is a key determinant of the state’s success in realizing its development aspirations.

“Therefore, TVET plays a role as a catalyst for talent development through investments to upgrade training facilities and enhance teaching quality,” he explained.

“Additionally, TVET also strengthens collaboration with industry partners to ensure that the training provided remains relevant to market needs,” he added.

He further commented that WorldSkills Malaysia Sarawak (WSM-Sarawak) acts as a strategic platform for identifying and developing youth potential.

“This platform allows participants to gain exposure to world-class skill standards, modern technology, structured training, and expert guidance,” he stated.

WSM-Sarawak not only produces skilled labor but also shapes a generation of industry players capable of driving the future progress of Sarawak,” he clarified.

Recognition and Future Collaborations

Abang Johari also praised the achievements of Sarawak’s youth who have won various awards at the national and international levels through their participation in WorldSkills.

“Congratulations to all of you, young ambassadors who have brought honor to Sarawak and Malaysia, proving that TVET education is a right and quality choice,” he remarked.

He emphasized that cooperation between the public and private sectors is crucial in developing the state’s talent landscape.

“Programs like the Industry Academy (ADI) will ensure that Sarawak has a future workforce that is skilled, flexible, and ready to support modern industries,” he asserted.

“Let us continue to collaborate, support each other, and invest in the potential of the younger generation to build a prosperous future for Sarawak in terms of economic, social, and sustainability growth,” he urged.

Moving Forward Together

Abang Johari also expressed appreciation to all agencies and the evaluation panel for ensuring the successful organization of WSM-Sarawak.

“Let us move forward with the spirit of Segulai Sejalai, Sejiwa, and Sehala to realize Sarawak’s aspiration to be a prosperous, progressive, and high-income region by 2030,” he concluded.

Also present were the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law and Native Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Adana Jed.
