Sarawak’s transition towards a digital and green economy necessitates a workforce that is not only highly skilled but also adept at fostering sustainable growth and innovation. This was emphasized by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He pointed out that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) plays a crucial role in equipping Sarawak’s workforce to meet the demands of industries that are being transformed by both technology and sustainability. TVET serves as a catalyst to cultivate a new generation of professionals who are innovative, disciplined, and capable of adapting to fast-evolving technological landscapes.

Importance of a Skilled Workforce

“The rapid expansion of the digital economy, coupled with the state’s commitment to green industries, underscores the critical need for a highly skilled workforce,” he remarked. He noted that Sarawak’s economic transformation, guided by the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, is aligned with global sustainability mandates and the growing impact of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies.

His remarks were delivered by the State Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, during the Premier Gold Hand Award Ceremony 2025, which coincided with the fourth edition of WorldSkills Malaysia Sarawak (WSM-Sarawak) on Monday.

Nurturing Young Talent

Abang Johari pointed out that WSM-Sarawak has emerged as a strategic platform for nurturing young talent that aligns with the economic needs of the state.

“This platform is instrumental in identifying young talent early on, providing intensive nurturing, and creating pathways to new opportunities at both the state and global levels,” he explained.

He further mentioned that exposing Sarawak’s youth to world-class skills standards and modern technologies enhances their capabilities through structured training, expert guidance, and competition-based learning.

“This initiative bridges the gap between education and industry, ensuring that Sarawak’s youth are not only employable but also positioned as leaders in driving our economy forward,” he noted.

Future-Ready Workforce

The Premier also announced the forthcoming Sarawak Talent Development Policy and Blueprint, which aims to bolster collaboration between public and private sectors in cultivating a workforce ready for the future.

“With dependable energy systems, expanding digital connectivity, and robust logistics, Sarawak is fostering an environment that enables businesses to innovate sustainably,” he added.

He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Sarawak Regional Skills Development Department (JPK) for their persistent efforts in creating platforms for training and developing young talent, aimed at propelling Sarawak’s future growth.
