Liew Jew Sheng, a 17-year-old student from Betong Vocational College, has gained attention for his remarkable achievement at the Sarawak Premier Gold Hand Award Ceremony 2025.

He earned the gold medal in the Additive Manufacturing category during the WorldSkills Malaysia Sarawak (WSM-Sarawak) 2025 event and was honored with the esteemed Sarawak Premier Gold Hand Award.

Dedication and Preparation

Currently in his fourth semester of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Liew dedicated over a year preparing for this prestigious competition.

He shared insights about Additive Manufacturing, emphasizing its focus on the research and development of mechanical models, including robotics.

“My journey in this field began at the college, guided by my teachers who encouraged me to participate in competitions,” he remarked.

Inspiration from Family

When discussing his motivation, Liew credited his father for his interest in this area.

“My father works as an automotive mechanic, and his influence sparked my interest, which inspired me to pursue this field,” he stated.

Liew’s father, aged 53, operates an automotive workshop in Jelukong, specializing in car repair.

Motivated by his father’s example, Liew aspires for his success to inspire young Sarawakians to explore vocational and technical skills.

Future Aspirations

“I hope that more young talent will be interested in studying in TVET as it will contribute to the state’s development,” he added.

Looking towards the future, Liew expressed his ambition to represent Sarawak at a higher level, stating he will continue to train and enhance his skills.

“I want to thank my coach for guiding me carefully and providing me with invaluable advice,” he concluded.

WSM-Sarawak is a bi-annual state-level skills competition co-organized by the State Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Sarawak Regional Skills Development Department (JPK). This event provides a platform for young talents to showcase their skills, foster innovation, and prepare Sarawak’s next generation of skilled professionals.
