Illegal dumping and unauthorized crossings along a major storm drain have been identified as significant factors contributing to the ongoing flooding issues in Kampung Pujut Padang Kerbau and the surrounding residential areas. Sarawak’s Minister for Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, highlighted that various sections of the earth storm drain are obstructed and overgrown with vegetation, which hinders the proper flow of water.
“The problem of rubbish being dumped into the storm drain has caused it to become clogged and ultimately blocked,” he stated. Furthermore, he pointed out that the culvert is inadequately sized, which hampers the efficient discharge of water.
Urgent Need for Action
During a recent site visit, Lee, who also serves as the assemblyman for Senadin, explained that the storm drain is crucial for managing runoff from adjacent housing areas and the village. He warned that even minor blockages in the main drain could lead to significant flooding, especially during heavy rainfall.
“This issue requires immediate attention. I will be contacting the Public Works Department (JKR) to conduct a thorough inspection of the entire storm drain and to eliminate any illegal crossings,” he added. He also noted that there is insufficient outlet capacity for water flow.
Long-Term Solutions Needed
Lee emphasized the importance of regular maintenance by JKR on the storm drain to avert future flooding scenarios. When questioned about the necessity of a long-term solution to the flooding dilemma, he remarked that this concerns the federal government, as the storm drain is positioned along the Pan Borneo Highway.
“JKR must engage with the federal government regarding this matter. The drainage system in this area requires significant improvements,” he concluded. Present at the site visit was JKR Miri assistant divisional engineer Chai Chung Enn.
