Kuching city has recently been celebrated as one of the premier retirement destinations worldwide, achieving an impressive ranking of 13th globally and placing among the top five in Asia, according to Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

This accolade was awarded by International Living, a well-known global lifestyle magazine, which conducted evaluations on factors such as cost of living, quality of life, and access to healthcare.

Growing Interest and Recognition

“Following the publication of this report, we have noticed a surge in interest from Singapore, with many inquiries regarding the Sarawak Malaysia My Second Home programme,” stated Wee during his welcoming remarks at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Annual Dinner 2025.

He emphasized that this recognition solidifies Kuching’s reputation as a desirable and credible retirement locale.

“This recognition confirms that Kuching offers a comfortable living environment and is acknowledged internationally as a stable, safe, and truly livable city,” he added.

Achievements and Future Plans

In addition, MBKS has recorded numerous significant achievements in 2025, receiving recognition at international, national, and state levels for its initiatives in sustainability, inclusivity, and community development.

“At the national level, we received two Special Mention Awards under the PLANMalaysia and Malaysian Institute of Planners MyPLACE Awards 2025, one for Kuching Park and another for the rejuvenation of Kenyalang Park,” he noted, highlighting how these projects have fostered meaningful public spaces and enhanced community identity.

MBKS also became the first council in Borneo to be recognized by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef) as a Candidate City under the Child Friendly Cities Initiative.

Teamwork and Commitment

“This is a significant advancement towards creating a city where every child feels safe, protected, and supported,” he remarked.

Wee acknowledged that these accomplishments were made possible through the collaboration of various departments and the unwavering dedication of staff at all levels, alongside support from councillors and management.

He further stated that MBKS’s efforts contribute not only to urban development but also to the broader nation-building initiatives of Sarawak.

Acknowledging Retired Employees

“Every action we take lays the groundwork for a stronger and more prosperous Sarawak,” he concluded.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who officiated the event, remarked that MBKS plays a pivotal role among the local authorities in the state.

“With its achievements, MBKS has become a benchmark for other local authorities, as they observe your every move,” he commended the staff for their commitment and expressed hope for their continued pursuit of excellence.

“We aspire for people to respect Sarawak not only for its resources but also for our diligence and performance,” he added.

Looking Ahead

As for the future, Wee stated that MBKS will persist in enhancing municipal services, expanding smart city initiatives, deepening inclusivity programmes, and investing in staff development as the council aims to elevate its standards further in the upcoming years.

The annual dinner also honored 16 retired employees, acknowledging their dedication and contributions to the development of the city and the state.
