The annual Back to School programme organized by Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) has returned this year with enhanced content, benefiting a total of 700 students across Kuching and Lundu. This was announced by Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Dato Sri Nancy Shukri.

Nancy, who also serves as the chairperson of YKN’s Board of Trustees, emphasized that the programme went beyond merely distributing school supplies. It now includes educational and awareness components involving various agencies.

Special Additions to the Programme

“Today’s programme is indeed a Back to School initiative that we hold annually. However, it is particularly special this year as we have more than one sponsor,” she remarked.

“This is the first time we are not just organizing a Back to School programme, but also enriching its content with contributions from the Royal Malaysia Police, which includes topics related to bullying and similar matters. Our counsellors are providing briefings on important issues that parents should be aware of,” Nancy shared with reporters during the Program Ceria Kasih and ‘Back to School’ Contributions.

She noted a strong turnout from parents, many of whom attended voluntarily without any transportation arranged by the organizers.

Beneficiaries and Contributions

Nancy indicated that 500 students benefited from the programme in Kuching, while another 200 students received similar assistance in Lundu, making the total number of beneficiaries 700.

“The timing of the programme is ideal as students will be starting the new school session in January. They receive contributions such as book vouchers, milk, school bags, and other essential items for school,” she added, noting that the positive response has inspired the organizers to continue the programme next year.

In her officiating speech, Nancy explained that the initiative aims to ensure children begin the 2026 school session with confidence, cheerfulness, and joy, made possible through collaborative efforts between Yayasan Kebajikan Negara and its strategic partners.

She expressed gratitude to Yayasan Sime Darby for sponsoring school clothing vouchers, PEKEMA for providing school bags and stationery, and Dutch Lady Milk Industries Berhad for contributing nutritious milk. “These contributions not only help the children but also alleviate the burden on parents,” she emphasized.

Nancy also acknowledged the Sarawak Education Department, including the Kuching and Padawan District Education Offices, along with volunteers and partner agencies, for their cooperation in ensuring the seamless execution of the programme.
