The Steering Committee for the Sabah Pan Borneo Highway project is set to convene more frequently to tackle the challenges affecting construction progress, as stated by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He mentioned that the involvement of representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Economy, and relevant Sabah state government agencies has facilitated in-depth discussions during these meetings.
Project Discussions and Solutions
These discussions encompass various critical aspects, including the current status of the project, encountered challenges, and suggested solutions aimed at ensuring the Pan Borneo Sabah Highway meets quality specifications, timelines, and budgetary constraints.
“Key topics under discussion included the project’s advancement, the obstacles faced, and strategic solutions proposed to ensure the highway is constructed to the required standards, within the expected timeframe and budget,” he informed reporters following a working visit to assess the progress of Phase 1 of the Pan Borneo Highway at Work Packages 7 and 8.
Nanta conveyed his optimism that issues related to highway construction could be addressed more efficiently through direct discussions in the Steering Committee meetings.
Field Visits and Monitoring
On the subject of his working visit, he indicated that such field assessments are a standard initiative by the ministry’s leadership to comprehensively monitor the physical progress of projects, identify challenges, and resolve any immediate issues on-site.
“This proactive approach is vital to avoid project delays and to ensure that no projects are categorized as ‘sick’. This Work Package is part of the strategic Kota Kinabalu Outer Ring Road (KKORR), which serves as a crucial link connecting the Southwest to the Northwest of Sabah.
“This infrastructure is not only essential for the state’s primary road network, but it is also anticipated to significantly impact socio-economic development, stimulate industrial investment, and improve connectivity between urban and rural areas,” he added.
Progress of the Highway Project
The Phase 1 project of the Pan Borneo Sabah Highway entails the construction of 706 kilometers (km) of roadway and is being executed in two main phases.
Phase 1A covers a distance of 318 km and is currently making good progress, with an on-site completion rate of 86.53 percent.
“Meanwhile, Phase 1B, which spans 388 km, is progressing as planned, with the physical progress currently recorded at 12.27 percent,” Nanta stated.
