The IEM-UMS Career Talk 2025 took place successfully on Wednesday at Galeri Majlis, Bangunan Canselori, Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
This initiative was organized by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch, in collaboration with the Young Engineers Section (Sabah Branch) and the IEM Student Section from the Faculty of Engineering UMS. The main objective of the program was to enhance students’ understanding of various engineering career pathways. Over 80 students from different fields, including electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, oil and gas, and computer engineering, participated in this engaging one-day event.
Event Highlights
The event was formally inaugurated by Professor Ir. Dr Rosalam Haji Sarbatly, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. His presence symbolized strong institutional support aimed at enhancing professional exposure for young engineers. The commencement of the event under his officiation set an optimistic tone for students, encouraging them to embrace innovation as they forge their future careers.
Among the distinguished attendees were Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob bin Hj. Jaafar, CEO of Sabah Electricity and Chairman of IEM Sabah Branch, Associate Professor Ir. Dr Abu Zahrim Bin Yaser (Dean, Faculty of Engineering UMS), Ir. Dr. Chua Bih Lii (Club Advisor of IEM-UMS Student Section), Lee Tze Yei (Chairman of IEM-YES Sabah Branch), Ts. Dr Nurul Shahadatul Afizah Binti Asman (Leader, IEM-YES Sabah Graduate and Student), and Ag Khairul Akmal Bin Kamaludin (Immediate Past Chairman, IEM-YES Sabah).

Five esteemed speakers from various engineering industries delivered impactful presentations that captivated the audience:
Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob bin Hj Jaafar discussed Empowering Sabah’s Energy Future.
Ir. Ts. Thien Sen Fong spoke on Engineering Sustainability Through Water Solutions.
Komander Ir. Shahriman bin Shawaluddin shared insights on From Battlefield to Workshop: Leadership Lessons.
Ts. Dr. Terence Jerome Daim addressed Beyond the Earth: Engineering in the Space Age.
Ir. Dickson Wong focused on Building a Sustainable World: Civil Engineering Perspectives.
The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where numerous questions were raised about what employers seek in fresh graduates. Fellow engineers shared their real-world expectations, leaving all attendees inspired and eager to explore career opportunities.
The success of the event was attributed to the efforts of IEM-YES Sabah, led by graduate and student leader Ts. Dr. Nurul Shahadatul and supported by the IEM-UMS Student Section Committee, under the direction of Efrain Harris Modoit and vice director Eronnel Pius Alex. The event was emceed by Nur Eizatul Syafinna Binti Jarmin and Muhamad Juliqram bin Rahman, with Meloney Diva Binti Patrick managing the floor.
