A ten-year-old boy in the Serian division has emerged as the newest casualty in Sarawak’s persistent rabies epidemic, state health officials announced today.
Dr. Jude Thomas, director of the Sarawak State Health Department, reported that the child began exhibiting rabies symptoms about two weeks after suffering a dog bite. Although he sought care at Serian Hospital and received post-exposure vaccinations, the infection had already progressed, and he succumbed at Sarawak General Hospital on Tuesday.
Since the outbreak was officially declared in July 2017, Sarawak has logged over 100 confirmed infections and more than 25 deaths. To date, Serian, Kuching and Samarahan divisions have been affected.
Dr. Jude urged locals to report any stray or unwell animals showing aggressive or erratic behaviour, ensure pets are vaccinated without delay, and seek urgent medical attention if bitten or scratched by an animal.
