Sabah authorities have securely destroyed 1,802 kg of worn-out Quranic materials by burning them and dispersing the ashes into the sea off the state’s eastern coast. The ceremony, organised by the State Islamic Affairs Department (JHEAINS), was held yesterday morning near Pulau Tiga, about two nautical miles from the mainland shore.

JHEAINS director Datuk Dr. Haji Ismail Salleh led the ritual, which commenced before dawn with a cleansing of calligraphic sheets and printed pages judged too damaged or defaced for dignified use. After the texts were ceremonially incinerated to ashes, the remains were packed into sealed drums and released into the South China Sea, in line with Islamic guidelines for respectful disposal of sacred writings.

Dr. Ismail highlighted that the operation adhered to strict environmental and religious protocols. “We ensured no harm would come to marine life or the surrounding ecosystem,” he stated, adding that scattering ashes at sea is a widely accepted method among scholars when burial is impractical. “This process safeguards the sanctity of the Quran while fulfilling our responsibility toward the environment.”

Senior officers from the state religious enforcement unit and representatives of local mosque committees were present and joined in a concluding prayer to mark the completion of the disposal. Department records show that over the past year nearly 2,000 kg of Quranic texts—including donations from mosques and the public—were collected statewide for this purpose.

The department reminded all mosques and religious schools to regularly review their Quran stocks and submit any damaged or unreadable copies for proper disposal rather than discarding them with ordinary waste. “Through these measures, we continue to show the utmost respect for the holy text,” Dr. Ismail added.
